Descrizione
Fluorite is a calcium fluoride mineral highly prized by collectors for its extraordinary chromatic variety and perfect crystal form. Known since antiquity, it takes its name from the Latin «fluere» (to flow) due to its use as a flux in metallurgy. It is an allochromatic mineral, taking on different colors depending on the impurities present in the crystal structure.
Characteristics
Fluorite crystallizes in the cubic system, typically forming perfect cubes, octahedra, or combinations of both. Colors range from colorless to green, purple, blue, yellow, pink, and even black. It has a hardness of 4 on the Mohs scale and a characteristic fluorescence under ultraviolet light, a property that gave its name to the phenomenon itself.
Genesis
It forms primarily in low-temperature hydrothermal environments, associated with lead and zinc ore deposits. Also common in sedimentary rocks and as a filling mineral in fractures and cavities. The finest specimens are often found in geodes or associated with quartz and calcite.
Varieties and Curiosities
Among the best-known varieties are «Blue John» fluorite, extremely rare and found only in Derbyshire, England, and the green variety from Morocco. Industrially it is essential for the production of hydrofluoric acid and as a flux in the steel industry. Some specimens display spectacular concentric zoning.
Importance for Collectors
It is one of the most sought-after minerals for the beauty of its crystals and variety of colors. Large specimens with perfect crystals command high prices, especially those from classic localities that are now exhausted. Fluorescence adds further appeal to collections.
Italian Localities
In Italy it is found mainly in the Alps, with fine crystals from mines in Trentino-Alto Adige and Valle d'Aosta. Occurrences are also reported in Sardinia, in the metalliferous deposits of the Iglesiente region, where it appears in smaller but good-quality crystals.
